One question that often arises is whether or not French Bulldogs can eat chicken.
The answer is yes, french bulldogs can! Not all french bulldogs have food allergies!
Chicken is a nutritious and delicious source of protein that can be incorporated into your French bulldogs diet.
However, it’s essential to understand how to serve it properly and be aware of any potential allergies or intolerances.
Let’s delve into the world of chicken for French Bulldogs!
Nutritional Benefits of Chicken
Protein
Chicken is a fantastic source of high-quality protein for dogs, including French Bulldogs. Protein is an essential nutrient that helps with muscle growth, tissue repair, and maintaining a healthy immune system.
Incorporating chicken into your French bulldogs diet, can provide them with these necessary benefits.
Vitamins and Minerals
Chicken is also rich in essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B6, vitamin B12, niacin, phosphorus, and selenium.
These nutrients contribute to various functions in your Frenchie’s body, from energy production to maintaining healthy skin and coat.
Preparing Cooked Chicken and Raw Chicken for Your French Bulldog
Raw vs. Cooked
Opinions vary on whether raw or cooked chicken is better for dogs. Some argue that raw chicken provides more natural nutrients, while others contend that cooked chicken is safer due to reduced bacteria levels.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what’s best for your Frenchie.

However, if you do choose to feed raw meat as part of a raw diet, make sure to handle it carefully to avoid cross-contamination.
When preparing chicken for your dog, boiled plain, unseasoned chicken is always best. Never give dark meat.
There is a way you can add flavor. After cutting the chicken into small pieces, heat a pan on medium high to high. Add a small amount of olive oil (yes olive and avocado oils are good for dogs!). Sear/brown the chicken in the pan. Once colored, pour enough water to cover the chicken and finish cooking.
Reserve the chicken water to add to your pups meal!
Deboning and Chopping
Regardless of whether you choose raw or cooked chicken, make sure to remove all bones and chicken skin before feeding it to your French Bulldog.

Chicken bones can splinter and cause severe injuries or blockages in your dog’s digestive system.
Chicken Skin is too fatty. Ingestion of chicken skin may lead to gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis.
It’s also a good idea to chop the chicken into small, manageable pieces to prevent choking.
Chicken-Based Dog Food
Commercial dog food made primarily from chicken can be an excellent choice for your Frenchie.
These foods typically have healthy fats, have balanced nutrients and are formulated specifically for dogs’ needs.
Make sure to choose a high-quality, reputable brand and read the ingredients list carefully.
Allergies and Intolerances
Identifying Food Allergies
Some French Bulldogs may have food allergies or intolerances to chicken or chicken based kibble dog foods.
Kibble can have a lot of additives and preservatives. So it can be possible that your dog may not be allergic to fresh cooked or raw chicken meat but show signs of allergies when fed chicken based kibble.
Food allergy symptoms can include skin irritations, excessive itchy skin, bald patches(alopecia), vomiting, or diarrhea.
If you suspect your French bulldogs have a chicken food allergy, consult your veterinarian for advice on alternative protein sources.
Introducing New Foods
When introducing chicken or any new food to your French bulldogs diet, it’s essential to do so gradually.
Start by adding small amounts of chicken to their regular food and monitor their reaction.
If they show no signs of an allergic reaction or digestive issues, you can continue to increase the amount of chicken in their diet.
Treats and Snacks
Homemade Treats
Homemade chicken treats can be a fantastic way to spoil your French bulldogs while providing them with healthy, nutritious snacks.
You can make simple chicken jerky by baking thin strips of boneless, skinless chicken in a low-temperature oven until they’re dry and chewy.
Alternatively, you can mix cooked, shredded chicken with dog-friendly ingredients like oats or sweet potato to create tasty, wholesome treats.
Store-Bought Options
There are also many store-bought chicken treats available for dogs.
Look for options with minimal additives and high-quality ingredients.
As always, monitor your Frenchie’s reaction to these treats and adjust their normal diet, accordingly.
Foods to Avoid
Harmful Foods
While chicken can be a nutritious part of your Frenchie’s diet, there are some foods that they should avoid eating.
These food substances include onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and raisins, which can be toxic to dogs.
Additionally, avoid feeding your French Bulldog cooked chicken bones, high-fat foods, or anything heavily seasoned or spicy.
Feeding Schedule and Portion Sizes
Age and Size Considerations
The optimal feeding schedule and portion sizes for your French Bulldog will depend on their age, size, activity level, and overall health.
Puppies require more frequent meals than adult dogs, while older dogs may need a reduced calorie intake.
Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best feeding schedule and portion sizes for your Frenchie.

What We Feed Our Puppies at Le Pepite
Allergies don’t typically turn up until later on in development. We start our puppies on Royal Canin Small Puppy food. It’s a great chicken based puppy food.
We have tried other brands and proteins but Royal Canin has been the best for us.
You might be wondering why.
Shape
The shape of Royal Canin small puppy food is different from all other brands.
Royal Canin tends to make different shapes for different breeds and breed sizes.
The small puppy food is triangle and flat shaped kibble. It’s easy to eat and small so puppies don’t easily choke on the pieces.
Fecal Consistency and Gut health
With other food proteins and brands I had always had a hard time with vomiting, loose stools and diarrhea, and skin problems.
Gut health is reflected through the entire body.
If your pup is getting frequent ear and skin infections, has horrible breath outside of teething, and other problems, most likely it’s starting from poor gut health.
Royal Canin Small Puppy Food has always given us great fecal consistency and size.
Try adding probiotics such as Fortiflora and canned pumpkin to your dog’s diet to see if there are any improvements.
As long as you’re not over feeding your pups, consistency should be firm and size should be small to normal.
The down side
Price. Royal Canin is ridiculously expensive but for us it’s worth it. It costs around $136 for 30lbs.
Our Adults
As for our adults, they’re currently on Victor Ocean Fish. As implied, this food is fish based but it still contains chicken meat.
Conclusion
In conclusion, chicken can be a healthy, nutritious addition to your French Bulldog’s diet.
It provides essential protein, vitamins, and minerals that contribute to their overall well-being.
Make sure to serve it properly by removing bones and chopping it into manageable pieces.
Always monitor your Frenchie for any signs of allergies or intolerances, and consult your veterinarian for personalized advice on their diet.
