What Are the Benefits of Using an Incubator for Puppies?
Incubators are an important tool for dog breeders. Used for healthy or weak puppies!
Puppy incubators can provide a safe, controlled environment to help these tiny creatures grow and thrive, most importantly maintaining body temperature.
What is a Puppy Incubator?
A puppy incubator is a specialized enclosure designed to create a stable and nurturing environment for newborn puppies. It maintains optimal ambient and body temperature, keeping puppies warm and stable, maintains humidity, and air circulation to promote healthy growth and development during the critical first weeks of life. Oxygen supply can be connected, as well as heat lamps, thermostat, hygrometer, nebulizer, and heating pads.
Benefits of Using a Puppy Incubator
There are several benefits of using a puppy incubator, including:
Temperature Regulation
Newborn puppies cannot regulate their own body heat efficiently, making them susceptible to hypothermia and other temperature-related issues. An incubator maintains a consistent temperature, ensuring puppies stay warm and cozy throughout their development until they are able to maintain normal temperature.
Humidity Control
Maintaining the right humidity levels is essential for puppies, as it helps prevent dehydration and supports their overall health. An incubator allows you to control the humidity, providing an optimal environment for your furry friends.
Oxygen Supply
Most incubators have areas to hook up oxygen, nebulizers, and other important things. Oxygen can vasty boost a pups immune system and jumpstart the brain! Even if its not necessary for the survival of the puppy, oxygen can definitely give your litter a bump!
Safety and Security
Incubators provide a secure, protected space for puppies to grow. This minimizes the risk of injury or accidents, allowing puppies to focus on developing and growing.
Prevention of Disease Transmission
By keeping newborn puppies in an incubator, you can limit their exposure to pathogens, reducing the risk of disease transmission from other animals or their environment.
Reduced Stress for the Mother
Using an incubator can alleviate stress on the mother dog, as she can rest and recover without having to constantly monitor and care for her puppies. This can result in a healthier mother and stronger puppies.
Types of Puppy Incubators
There are two main types of puppy incubators:
Portable Incubators
These incubators are lightweight and easy to transport, making them ideal for breeders or pet owners who need a mobile solution for their puppies.
Stationary Incubators
Stationary incubators are larger and more robust, offering a long-term solution for puppies. These are suitable for veterinary clinics, shelters, or breeders with a dedicated space for puppy care.
Choosing the Right Puppy Incubator
When selecting a puppy incubator, consider the following factors:
- The number and size of puppies you need to accommodate
- The level of temperature and humidity control required
- The availability of space and power supply
- Your budget and preference for portable or stationary models
How to Use a Puppy Incubator Safely
To use a puppy incubator safely, follow these guidelines:
- Set up the incubator in a quiet, draft-free location.
- Monitor and adjust the temperature and humidity settings according to the needs of the puppies.
- Ensure that the incubator is clean and sanitized before introducing puppies to the environment.
- Keep the incubator away from direct sunlight or heat sources to avoid overheating.
- Regularly check on the puppies to ensure they are comfortable and monitor their progress.
- Consult with a veterinarian for guidance on the appropriate care for the puppies’ specific breed and age.
- Generally, ideal temperature should be set between 82-90°F for the first week, gradually decreasing to 75-80°F by the fourth week Types of Incubators

Puppywarmer
The portable Puppywarmer® puppy incubator uses an infrared heater with encased insulation to reflect more infrared wavelengths to keep newborn puppies and kittens warm.
If needed, the incubator for newborn puppies puppies may be attached to a nebulizer or oxygen concentrators and has a medical grade, fast-acting sensor.
The removable stainless-steel top makes cleaning easier. Conveniently transport the portable incubator for puppies in a vehicle using an inverter.
The Puppywarmer 12×12” Incubator is the incubator of choice for Yorkshire Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Papillon, Pomeranian, Shetland Sheepdog, Pug, Chihuahua and other small, toy and smaller medium sized dogs.
The 12×12” incubator may be small in size, but it packs all of the powerful features of the 18×18” and 18×24” Puppywarmer incubators:
- Proportional controller that pulses electricity to the heater for precise temperature control for 80°-100°F in one degree increments.
- Fast acting type J thermocouple for accurate temperature sensing
- Glass enclosure to create the thermal gradient puppies need that is also easy to clean and disinfect
- Closed cell mat that has “give and grip” and is easy to clean and disinfect

The 12×12” Puppywarmer incubator is an excellent choice for small and toy breeds, or treatment of “that one puppy.” Rescue groups refer to the 12×12 incubator as “The nightstand incubator” as it is light and portable and has been set up on a nightstand in the bedroom.
We recommend the standard oxygen concentrator with the 12×12” incubator. The standard oxygen concentrator normalizes initial settings at start up at 1 liter per minute—the ideal starting setting for the 12×12” incubator.
Breeders planning to keep an entire litter in the incubator longer than just a few days should consider the 18×18” Puppywarmer incubator.

FAQs
How long should puppies stay in an incubator?
The duration depends on the puppies’ health, size, and breed. Typically, puppies stay in an incubator until they can efficiently regulate their body temperature, which is usually around 2-4 weeks.
For us, pups are usually out of the incubator by 2 weeks. They start to scream for more space. So we move them into the whelping box, which still has great heat sources.
How do I clean and maintain a puppy incubator?
To clean a puppy incubator, remove the puppies and any bedding, then use warm soapy water to clean the surfaces. Rinse thoroughly and dry before replacing the bedding and returning the puppies to the incubator. Regular cleaning and maintenance help ensure a healthy environment for the puppies.
Can I use a human incubator for puppies?
While human incubators share some similarities with puppy incubators, they are not designed for the specific needs of puppies. It is recommended to use an incubator specifically designed for puppies to ensure their safety and well-being.

If you have an incubator, when do you take the puppies out to feed
Hello! I usually only use my incubator first the first 2 weeks. If I have only 1 puppy like I currently do, time may extend to 3 weeks depending on the needs and comfort of the puppy. For the first 2 weeks we feed every 2 hours around the clock. So they’re put on mom every 2 hours day and night for feeding and cleaning.
