French Bulldogs have charmed their way into the hearts of many, and the rare Velvet French Bulldogs are no exception. But what exactly distinguishes these furry friends from their French Bulldog relatives? In this article, we’ll explore what are velvet french bulldogs, their history, health, training, and why they might just be the perfect addition to your family.

What are Velvet French Bulldogs?

Velvet French Bulldogs are a subset of the popular French Bulldog breed. They are named for their remarkably soft, velvety coat that distinguishes them from other French Bulldogs. Their origin, characteristics, and why they’ve captured the attention of many will be detailed below.

Horse coat“, the true Velvet, is very short and feels prickly when brushed against the direction of the fur but silky when pet forward.

Brush Coat“, not a true velvet, is soft like silk, thin with a little more length on the back but almost bald on the face and feet.

An explanation from Experienced French Bulldog Breeder “First Class Canine Travel, Anna Thomas

Big Rope was introduced to the French bulldogs by crossing with a Shar Pei and another dog that the Chinese use is called a white bug dog it is a cross essentially.

In doing this, they brought the horse coat from the Shar Pei across into the French bulldogs.

Unbeknownst to them it wasn’t intentional it was done by accident which of course is a dominant gene and shortened the coat.

The “brush coat” is also a Shar Pei coat we are seeing in the Frenchies. This has a short coat on the face and legs but has the longer coat on the body.

These are unfortunately being mistaken for and sold as velvet as they do resemble them when they are born.

It’s only when they reach to adulthood that they get their coat. A lot of people have been scammed by the Chinese.
